The fabric used is often a purple or black cloth, which is then removed on Easter Sunday to symbolize the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the 20 th century, lavenders and lilacs replaced the heavy mauves and decadent purples of the previous generations. How has purple translated from queer imagery, literature and music onto the clothed queer body – or more specifically, the clothed lesbian body? Of all the shades of purple, lavender is that which is most associated with lesbians and the LGBTQ community as a whole.

But why lavender? Inthe lavender came to symbolize empowerment, as the queer rights movement began to reclaim the color as a symbol of resistance. Meanwhile, the white hue represents movement members who identify as intersex, gender-neutral, or transitioning. With a palette of yellow and purple, which are colors historically associated with intersex people, this flag was created in July by Morgan Carpenter.
